Coffee machines for a construction site office

Illustration for: Coffee machines for a construction site office

A construction site coffee machine lives in the site office or the smoko shed, not on a polished kitchenette. Dust, muddy boots, and a crew that all hits the urn at once. The drink still has to be a button, because nobody on the tools is learning a group head.

The brief is the same as a warehouse tea room, with a shorter lease and a dirtier bench.

What the shed needs

Power, water, and a surface the machine can sit on. A site office with a kettle and a jar of instant already has two of those. If the water is a jerry can or a tap across the yard, say so. A tank you fill is fine. A site with no power is not a coffee corner yet.

We put the machine in. We do not rebuild the shed, supply milk or cups, or train anyone. A warehouse or workshop is the closest cousin. We install around Sydney from Forestville. If the postcode is outside what we can service, that is the first thing you hear.

Smoko is the test

The queue is the morning smoko, not a polite two cups spread over the day. An automatic bean-to-cup machine grinds whole beans per cup and pours at a button. Arico installs a Saeco Royal Plus. Anyone on the crew can use it.

Pods fit a small shelf and add up once the whole gang pours at 9:30. Instant is why someone still does a run to the shops. What instant costs is that run.

A traditional espresso machine with someone employed to run it is a different product. If the site office wants that, say so on the call.

Count the days on site

Do not copy an office headcount if half the crew is on another job by Wednesday, or if Saturday is the busy day. Count the people who are actually there, and count the smoko queue rather than the names on the induction list.

An office of twenty is one sketch, about 6 or 7 kilograms if everyone is in five days and drinks twice. A site that is in four days is smaller. A shed that all pours at once may want the same machine and a bigger monthly order, not a second species of machine. The first month corrects the guess.

Sites move

Construction offices move when the job does. Coffee machine hire often bills the hardware in a quiet month, and it often bills you if you leave early. Rental is that quote. On our arrangement the machine continues while the beans do. Stop ordering and it stops. You do not own it, and you do not own the repair.

Switching suppliers is worth reading if a hire contract is already on the job.

Dust and the hopper

Wipe the bench. Keep the hopper closed. Empty the grounds. That is the daily list. Cleaning the machine is the roster. Scale and anything that is not beans or water is ours, while you order beans each month, from as little as 40 cents a cup.

The machine is the Saeco Royal Plus. High-vis does not change the drink. It changes where it sits and who fills the hopper.

Questions

What coffee machine works on a construction site?

An automatic bean-to-cup machine in the site office or smoko shed: whole beans, a grind per cup, a button. Arico installs a Saeco Royal Plus. It needs power, water, and a bench. It does not need a barista.

What happens if the site moves?

Hire contracts often bill you if you leave early. On Arico's plan the machine continues while you order beans each month. Stop ordering and the arrangement stops. You do not own the machine.
